Six registers, all public, all linked
Every number on this site is read from one of these on the date at the top of each page. The species descriptions and the wording of the method are written here; the figures are not ours and each one links to where it came from. There are no estimates anywhere on the site and no figure has been carried over from memory.
| Register | What it gives us | How much | Terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| ClinicalTrials.gov | The United States' public register of clinical studies, run by the National Library of Medicine. Every trial, status, enrolment figure, sponsor and dose on this site is read from its API, version 2. | 197 studies | Public domain (US Government work) |
| Europe PMC | A literature index of the life sciences run by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. Publication counts, randomised-trial and review listings come from its REST service. Titles and journal names only; we do not reproduce abstracts. | 29,315 papers counted | Metadata open; individual articles under their publishers' terms |
| GBIF | The Global Biodiversity Information Facility. Occurrence counts by country and by month are its verified records with coordinates. | 915,765 occurrence records | CC BY 4.0 and CC0, per publisher |
| iNaturalist | Research-grade observation counts, and one photograph per species. Every photograph is credited to its photographer on the page it appears on, with its licence, and links back to the original observation. | 403,852 observations | Photographs CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA, named on each page |
| openFDA | The US Food and Drug Administration's own interface to its adverse-event reporting system for foods and supplements. Reports are voluntary and unverified; the FDA says so itself and so does every page here that uses them. | 267 reports | Public domain (US Government work) |
| PubChem | The National Library of Medicine's chemistry database. Molecular formula and mass for each named compound. | 46 compounds | Public domain (US Government work) |
If a figure here disagrees with a register, the register is right. Every row above links to the register itself, so any number on this site can be checked against the source it came from.
